How does this calculator work?
EU lens categories 0–4 are defined by light transmittance (80–100% down to 3–8%). Recommended category rises with UV index (Low → Cat 1, Moderate → Cat 2, High/Very High → Cat 3, Extreme → Cat 4), plus one step for reflective surfaces (snow/water) and one step for high eye sensitivity. Category 4 is NOT safe for driving. Always verify UV400 certification.

How this is calculated
The European standard EN ISO 12312-1 classifies sunglass lenses into five categories (0–4) by luminous transmittance — the fraction of visible light the lens passes. Category 0 blocks 0–20% of light (fashion/indoor use); Category 3 blocks 82–92% (bright sun, beach, general skiing); Category 4 blocks 92–97% and is designed for extreme high-altitude environments like glaciers — it must NOT be worn while driving in most countries because it reduces contrast to a hazardous level.
The recommended category starts from your UV index reading using the WHO scale (0–2 Low, 3–5 Moderate, 6–7 High, 8–10 Very High, 11+ Extreme). Snow and open water surfaces reflect 25–90% of UV radiation, effectively increasing your exposure — so beach and mountain activities push the recommendation one category higher. Light-coloured eyes and prior eye surgery or conditions reduce tolerance to glare and UV, warranting another step up.
The UV index and lens category give you the protective darkness needed. UV400 certification — which blocks all wavelengths up to 400 nm — is a separate requirement and is strongly recommended regardless of category; a dark lens without proper UV coating can increase harm by dilating the pupil while letting ultraviolet through.
