How does this calculator work?
Multiply the input by its seconds-per-unit factor, then divide by the target unit factor. All sub-week ratios are exact integers. Months (avg ≈ 30.437 d) and years (avg 365.2422 d) use Gregorian averages. Enter any value and unit for instant conversion across all time units.
Formula
How this is calculated
Every conversion passes through a common base: seconds. The entered value is multiplied by the number of seconds in the source unit — for example, 1 hour = 3,600 s — and then divided by the seconds-per-unit for each target. All ratios smaller than a week are exact: 1 min = 60 s, 1 h = 3,600 s, 1 d = 86,400 s, 1 wk = 604,800 s.
Months and years require averages because the Gregorian calendar is not uniform. This converter uses the ISO / Gregorian averages: 1 year = 365.2422 days (accounting for the 4-year leap cycle and the 400-year Gregorian correction), giving 31,556,952 s per year; 1 month = 365.2422 ÷ 12 ≈ 30.437 days = 2,629,746 s. Real calendar months range from 28 to 31 days; real years are 365 or 366 days.
The timeline bar shows the entered duration as a fraction of one average Gregorian year, capped at 100 % for very long durations. For computing with exact calendar dates and months, use a dedicated date-arithmetic tool.
Frequently asked questions
1 day = 86,400 s exactly (60 × 60 × 24). 1 week = 604,800 s. 1 Gregorian year (avg) = 31,556,952 s ≈ 365.2422 × 86,400. Actual calendar years are either 31,536,000 s (365 d) or 31,622,400 s (366 d).
Using the Gregorian average: 365.2422 × 24 ≈ 8,765.81 hours (often rounded to 8,766). A regular year has 8,760 h; a leap year has 8,784 h.
Calendar months have 28, 29, 30 or 31 days, so there is no single exact ratio. The Gregorian average of 365.2422 ÷ 12 ≈ 30.437 days per month is the standard used for engineering and scientific unit conversions. For exact monthly counting, use calendar date arithmetic.
