How does this calculator work?
Enter the pre-tax price, sales-tax rate (e.g. 8.5%), and tip percentage (e.g. 18%): tip = net × tip%, tax = net × tax%, grand total = net + tax + tip. Divide by the number of people to get each person's share. Tipping on the pre-tax subtotal is the conventional practice in many countries.
Formula
How this is calculated
Restaurant etiquette in many countries (especially the US) calls for tipping on the pre-tax (net) price rather than on the after-tax amount. If you tip 18% on a $50 pre-tax bill you owe $9 in tip, not 18% of $50 + tax. This calculator takes the pre-tax price, the local sales-tax rate, and the desired tip percentage, then computes each component separately and sums them to a grand total.
The tip is Net × (Tip% ÷ 100) and the sales tax is Net × (Tax% ÷ 100). The grand total is the sum of all three. The per-person amount is the grand total divided by the number of people, with at least one person assumed to avoid division by zero. All amounts are in whatever currency you enter — the maths is identical.
If you prefer to tip on the post-tax total (also common), simply enter the after-tax price as the "net" amount and set the tax rate to 0%. Typical US sales-tax rates range from 0% (Oregon, Montana) to ~10% (some cities); enter the specific rate for your location.
Frequently asked questions
Most etiquette guides recommend tipping on the pre-tax subtotal, which is the cost of the food and drinks before tax is applied. However, the practical difference is small — on a 10% tax rate and 18% tip, tipping post-tax adds only 1.8% of the net price. Many people simply tip on the final bill total for convenience.
Sales-tax rates vary by state and city. Common US combined rates range from 0% (Oregon, New Hampshire) to about 11% (Louisiana in some jurisdictions). Check your receipt for the exact rate applied, or look up your city/state combined rate. The rate on your restaurant receipt is the most accurate value to use.
The standard tip calculator starts from the total bill amount already on your receipt (which may include tax). This calculator starts from the pre-tax subtotal and computes tax and tip as separate line items, letting you see exactly how much of the grand total is each component — useful when the receipt shows only the subtotal and you want to verify the calculation.
