How does this calculator work?
Measure trunk circumference at 4.5 ft above ground. Divide by π to get the diameter (DBH). Multiply DBH in inches by the species growth factor (e.g. 4.0 for red oak, 3.0 for silver maple) to get the estimated age in years. Accuracy is ±20%; ring counting gives a precise count.

How this is calculated
The growth-factor method, popularised by the International Society of Arboriculture (ISA), estimates tree age from the trunk diameter at breast height (DBH, measured at 4.5 ft / 1.37 m above ground). Each species is assigned a growth factor — the average number of years the species takes to add one inch of trunk diameter. A red oak with a growth factor of 4.0 and a 20-inch DBH is estimated to be about 80 years old.
If you measure circumference instead of diameter (which is easier to do accurately with a flexible tape), the calculator converts it automatically: DBH = circumference ÷ π. Species grow at different rates depending on climate, soil, water, and available sunlight, so the method is an approximation — actual ring counts from a core sample (increment borer) are more accurate. Expect ±20% error in most cases; faster-growing silver maples and slower-growing white oaks carry more uncertainty.
Growth factors in this calculator are drawn from widely cited urban-forestry references including the ISA's arborist resource guides. The "custom" option lets you enter a factor for unlisted species — slower-growing trees typically have factors of 5–7, while vigorous fast growers fall in the 2–3 range.

Use a flexible tape measure (or a piece of string and a ruler) and wrap it around the trunk at exactly 4.5 feet (137 cm) above the ground — the standard "breast height" used in all forestry measurements. Avoid bumps and branch collars.
It is an estimate with typical uncertainty of ±15–25%. Growth rate varies with species, climate, soil quality, and competition. An increment borer (core sample) that reveals actual annual rings is more accurate, but requires a specialist tool.
Select "Custom" and use a factor of 2–3 for fast growers (cottonwood, silver maple, weeping willow), 4–5 for medium growers (most oaks, elms, ashes), and 5–7 for slow growers (dogwood, redbud, some conifers). When in doubt, 4.0 is a reasonable average.
