Turkey Defrost Calculator — How Long to Thaw a Turkey
Enter the weight of your frozen turkey to find out how many days or hours it will take to safely defrost using the refrigerator, cold water or microwave method — all based on current USDA food safety recommendations.

How does this calculator work?
Refrigerator: allow 24 hours per 4 lbs (e.g. 14 lbs = 4 days). Cold water: 30 min per pound with water changed every 30 min, cook immediately after. Microwave: about 6 min/lb on defrost setting, cook immediately after. Never thaw on the counter — bacteria multiply quickly above 40°F (4°C).
Formula
How this is calculated
The USDA recommends three safe methods to thaw a frozen turkey — refrigerator, cold water or microwave — and explicitly advises against thawing at room temperature, which allows the outer layers to warm into the bacteria-growth zone (40–140°F / 4–60°C) while the centre remains frozen.
Refrigerator thawing is the safest and most hands-off method: keep the turkey in its original wrapper on a tray on the lowest shelf (to prevent drips contaminating other food) and allow about 24 hours per 4 pounds of weight. A fully thawed bird can stay refrigerated safely for 1–2 more days before cooking. The cold water method is faster: submerge the turkey in its sealed original wrapper in a sink or tub of cold tap water (40°F or below) and change the water every 30 minutes; allow 30 minutes per pound. The turkey must be cooked immediately after it is fully thawed — it cannot be re-refrigerated. Microwave thawing is the fastest but the least even: check the manufacturer's manual, as wattages vary widely; approximately 6 minutes per pound on the defrost (50%) setting is a common starting point. Parts near the edges may begin to cook, so the turkey must go straight into the oven.
These times assume the turkey started fully frozen and uniformly cold. A partially thawed or frost-free-frozen bird may thaw faster. The cold water and microwave times are for guidance — a meat thermometer confirming no ice crystals remain in the cavity is the reliable check.
Frequently asked questions
No — the USDA advises against it. Room-temperature thawing allows the outer layer of the turkey to enter the temperature danger zone (40–140°F / 4–60°C) where bacteria multiply rapidly, even while the interior remains frozen. This creates a food safety risk regardless of how cold the room is.
Allow one full day in the refrigerator for every 4 pounds of turkey. A 16-pound bird needs 4 days; a 20-pound bird needs 5 days. Add an extra day as a buffer if your refrigerator runs on the warmer side. A fully thawed turkey in the fridge can be safely held for 1–2 more days before cooking.
Use the cold water method: keep the turkey in its original sealed wrapper, submerge it in a sink of cold water (or a clean cooler with ice), and change the water every 30 minutes. Allow 30 minutes per pound — a 14-lb bird will take about 7 hours. Cook it immediately after thawing. Alternatively, a frozen turkey can go straight into the oven: add 50% more cooking time and expect uneven browning.
