UK to US Shoe Size Converter
Converting between UK and US shoe sizes can be confusing because men's and women's systems use different offsets. Enter your UK size and select the gender fit to instantly get the US, EU, Australian and Japanese equivalents, plus your estimated foot length in centimetres and inches.
Gender / fit
Men's US size (UK + 0.5). Some brands use UK + 1 — always check the brand's own size guide.

How does this calculator work?
Men's: US = UK + 0.5 (some brands UK + 1). Women's: US = UK + 2. EU size ≈ foot length in cm ÷ 0.667 (where foot length is derived from UK size via the Brannock formula). All conversions are approximations — check the specific brand's size guide before purchasing.
Formula
How this is calculated
UK shoe sizes follow the Barleycorn system, where one size = 1/3 inch of foot length. Men's sizes start from a different origin point to women's, which is why the UK-to-US offset differs by gender. For men's footwear the most commonly used conversion is US = UK + 0.5 (based on the SATRA/ISO recommendation), though some brands — particularly American ones — use US = UK + 1. For women's footwear, the standard is US = UK + 2.
EU (Continental European) sizes are based on Paris points, where one size = 2/3 cm of foot length. The calculator derives foot length from the UK size using the standard Brannock formula (men: (UK + 25)/3 inches; women: (UK + 23)/3 inches), then converts to EU by dividing by 2/3 cm per size. Australian men's sizes match UK sizes; Australian women's are typically UK + 1.5. Japanese (JIS) sizes are simply the foot length in millimetres.
All conversions are approximations. Different brands, even within the same country, may use slightly different lasts (shoe forms), so a US 9.5 in one brand may fit differently to a US 9.5 in another. When ordering online across countries, always measure your foot length and compare it to the brand's specific size chart.
Frequently asked questions
The UK sizing scale for men and women starts from a different baseline foot length. A UK 9 men's shoe is made for a longer foot than a UK 9 women's shoe. When those foot lengths are mapped onto the US scale (which also has gender-specific baselines), the offsets come out as +0.5 for men and +2 for women.
Yes — EU sizes can be fractional (e.g. 43.5) for half-size UK shoes. Most European brands round to the nearest whole number or produce half-sizes in their own system. The formula gives a calculated value; round to the nearest available EU size when shopping.
The Brannock formula gives the foot length for a correctly-fitting shoe at the given UK size — it is not your measured bare foot length. Your bare foot is typically 0.5–1 cm shorter than the "shoe foot length" because shoes need room for toe flex and socks. For a precise measurement, stand on a sheet of paper and measure heel to longest toe.
