How this is calculated
The calculator sets today's date to midnight (stripping the time component) and subtracts it from the vacation date, also at midnight. The millisecond difference is divided by 86 400 000 (ms per day) and rounded up to the nearest whole day, so even a vacation tomorrow counts as 1 day remaining, not 0.
Weeks are the integer part of days ÷ 7, and the remainder (days mod 7) is the leftover days after full weeks. Monthly estimates use 30.44 days per month (the average calendar month) — this is approximate and can vary by up to a day depending on the specific months involved. Total hours are calculated directly from the millisecond difference, giving a sense of the exact count for close countdowns.
The progress bar anchors to January 1 of the current year as the "start" point, so it shows how far through the year you have progressed toward the vacation date. If the vacation is in a future year, the bar will show progress well past 100% of the current year, which is displayed as a full bar. Dates in the past are rejected — the calculator requires a future vacation date.
