Quick answer

How does this calculator work?

India's 2021 COVID-19 vaccine rollout had four phases: Phase 1 (~30M healthcare and frontline workers from Jan 2021), Phase 2 (~167M adults 60+ and 45–59 with comorbidities from Mar 2021), Phase 3 (~150M adults 45–59 without comorbidities from Apr 2021), and Phase 4 (~600M adults 18–44 from May 2021). Estimated wait = people ahead ÷ weekly vaccination rate. All figures are 2021 estimates.

Formula
People ahead = sum of all higher-priority phase group sizes • Estimated weeks = people_ahead / weekly_vaccination_rate
How this is calculated

India's 2021 COVID-19 vaccination rollout — administered through the CoWIN portal — used a phased approach to prioritise the most vulnerable and high-exposure groups. Phase 1 (launched 16 January 2021) covered healthcare workers (~10 million) and frontline workers including police, military, and municipal sanitation staff (~20 million). Phase 2 (from 1 March 2021) opened to all adults aged 60 and over (~140 million) and adults 45–59 with co-morbidities listed by MoHFW (~27 million). Phase 3 (from 1 April 2021) extended eligibility to all adults 45 and over. Phase 4 (from 1 May 2021) opened the programme to all adults 18 and above, covering the remaining ~600 million eligible adults.

The calculator places you in the appropriate phase based on your age, healthcare worker status, and comorbidity status, then counts all the people in higher-priority phases as 'ahead of you'. Dividing that number by the weekly vaccination rate gives an estimated wait in weeks. Group sizes are based on 2021 Census projection estimates from the Registrar General of India and MoHFW documentation; the actual distribution between groups with and without comorbidities carries some uncertainty.

India's rollout scale was unprecedented: by mid-2021 India was administering over 5 million doses per day at peak, though vaccine supply shortages in April–June 2021 significantly slowed the programme. The 3.5 million people per week default is a conservative estimate; update it with the latest CoWIN dashboard figure for a more current result.

Frequently asked questions

Adults aged 60 and over were all included in Phase 2 regardless of health status because age itself is the strongest predictor of severe COVID-19 outcome in that group. For the 45–59 age band, MoHFW used comorbidities as an additional risk filter to prioritise those at elevated risk before expanding to all 45–59 year olds in Phase 3.

India primarily used Covishield (AstraZeneca/Serum Institute of India) and Covaxin (Bharat Biotech). Covishield accounted for the large majority of doses administered. Sputnik V and later Corbevax and Covovax were also approved and used in later phases. All authorised vaccines were available across phases.

The CoWIN dashboard (cowin.gov.in) and the MoHFW daily press briefing publish cumulative and daily dose figures. Divide the 7-day rolling total by 2 (for a 2-dose primary course) to estimate people completing their primary series per week, then enter that figure in the weekly rate field. India's peak was over 25 million doses per week in mid-2021.
