About this calculator

The waist-to-hip ratio (WHR) compares the circumference of your waist to that of your hips, giving a quick indicator of how fat is distributed around your body. A higher ratio reflects more abdominal (central) fat, which research links to a greater risk of heart disease, type 2 diabetes, and other metabolic conditions than fat carried around the hips and thighs.

The World Health Organization considers a ratio above 0.90 for men and 0.85 for women to indicate substantially increased health risk. Measure your waist at its narrowest point and your hips at their widest, keeping the tape level and snug but not compressing the skin. WHR complements BMI because it captures where fat sits, not just how much there is.

Frequently asked questions

A ratio at or below 0.90 for men and 0.85 for women is generally considered lower risk by the World Health Organization.

Abdominal fat is metabolically active and more strongly tied to cardiovascular and metabolic risk than fat stored on the hips and thighs.

Measure the waist at its narrowest point and the hips at their widest, with the tape level and snug against the skin without compressing it.
