How does this calculator work?
Speed = warp_factor^(10/3) × c (TNG scale, exact for W ≤ 9). Warp 1 = 1c, Warp 5 = 214c, Warp 9 = 1,516c. Travel time = distance (ly) ÷ speed (× c) × 365.25 days. Warp 10 = infinite velocity (transwarp threshold). Above Warp 9 the scale becomes non-linear and the formula is a lower bound.

How this is calculated
The warp scale used here is the TNG-era scale established by Michael Okuda in the Star Trek: The Next Generation Technical Manual (1991). Under this system the speed in multiples of the speed of light (c) is the warp factor raised to the power 10/3. That gives: Warp 1 = 1c (exactly), Warp 2 ≈ 10c, Warp 5 ≈ 214c, Warp 9 ≈ 1,516c. These match the canonical figures printed in the Technical Manual and used by the show's writers as reference.
Above Warp 9 the Okuda chart becomes non-linear and the speed climbs steeply towards infinity as W approaches 10. The formula W^(10/3) accurately reproduces the tabled values up to Warp 9 but underestimates beyond that — Warp 9.9 is canonically listed at about 3,053c, whereas the formula gives about 2,078c. Warp 10 is defined as infinite velocity (transwarp threshold); no ship in the main timeline achieves it. A warning is shown when the input exceeds Warp 9.
Travel time is simply the distance in light-years divided by the speed in multiples of c, converted to years; then formatted into days or years as appropriate. All speeds are purely fictional — special relativity forbids any mass from reaching or exceeding c, let alone 1,516 times c.

No. The Original Series (TOS) used an earlier, different scale in which Warp 8 ≈ 512c (the cube of warp factor), established before Okuda revised it for The Next Generation. The TNG scale is what this calculator uses and what most fans mean when they cite warp speeds for TNG, DS9, Voyager, and later shows.
Alpha Centauri, our nearest stellar neighbour, is 4.37 light-years away. At Warp 5 (≈ 214c) the journey takes about 7.5 days. At Warp 9 (≈ 1,516c) it takes a little over 1 day. By comparison, the fastest real spacecraft ever built (Parker Solar Probe) would take roughly 6,000 years.
Okuda designed the upper end of the scale to model the enormous energy costs of approaching the transwarp barrier, mirroring the physics analogy of objects approaching the speed of light. It is a storytelling device — it means Voyager's top speed of Warp 9.975 is far faster than Warp 9.5, making each tenth above Warp 9 carry dramatic weight.
