MAGI Calculator — Modified Adjusted Gross Income 2024

MAGI (Modified Adjusted Gross Income) is your AGI with specific deductions added back. The IRS uses it to determine Roth IRA contribution eligibility, traditional IRA deductibility, ACA premium credits, and Medicare IRMAA surcharges.

Cum funcționează acest calculator?

For Roth IRA purposes, MAGI = AGI + student loan interest deduction + IRA deduction + foreign income exclusion. In 2024, Roth contributions phase out from $146,000–$161,000 (single) or $230,000–$240,000 (MFJ). Enter your AGI and add-backs to see your allowed contribution.

Formulă
MAGI = AGI + student loan interest + IRA deduction + foreign income exclusion (for Roth IRA purposes)
How this is calculated

Modified Adjusted Gross Income starts from your Adjusted Gross Income (AGI) shown on Form 1040 line 11, then adds back specific above-the-line deductions. The exact add-backs depend on which tax benefit is being tested. For Roth IRA eligibility the IRS requires restoring: the student loan interest deduction (up to $2,500), any traditional IRA deduction claimed on Schedule 1, and any income excluded under the foreign earned income exclusion (IRC §911). Those add-backs prevent deductions from artificially shrinking the income figure used for eligibility.

For the 2024 tax year, Roth IRA contributions phase out for single filers between $146,000 and $161,000 MAGI, and for married filing jointly between $230,000 and $240,000. Married filing separately face a very tight $0–$10,000 band. Within the phase-out window, the allowed contribution is reduced proportionally and rounded to the nearest $10; the base limit is $7,000 ($8,000 for taxpayers aged 50 or older).

The traditional IRA deductibility percentage shown assumes you or your spouse are covered by a workplace retirement plan — if neither of you has such a plan, the deduction is generally unrestricted regardless of MAGI. All thresholds are 2024 IRS figures indexed annually for inflation and are offered as editable estimates; verify current limits in IRS Publication 590-A or consult a tax professional.

Întrebări frecvente

AGI is gross income minus above-the-line deductions. MAGI adds specific deductions back. Which deductions are restored depends on the benefit being tested: for Roth IRA the main add-backs are student loan interest, traditional IRA deductions, and excluded foreign income. Because you are only adding back, MAGI is always at least as high as AGI.

A direct Roth IRA contribution is prohibited once MAGI reaches the upper limit ($161,000 single / $240,000 married filing jointly in 2024). A backdoor Roth IRA — a non-deductible traditional IRA contribution followed by a conversion — is a common alternative for higher earners. Consult a tax advisor for your situation.

No. MAGI is defined differently for each purpose. For ACA premium tax credits, MAGI adds back non-taxable Social Security benefits and tax-exempt interest. For Medicare IRMAA, the IRS uses the MAGI from two years prior and the add-backs differ again. This calculator focuses on the Roth/traditional IRA definition, which is the most commonly needed.
