The millimeter is the practical engineering unit for sub-centimeter measurements. All conversions into millimeters are derived from two exact base definitions: the meter (SI base unit) and the inch (exactly 25.4 mm). From these two anchors, every other unit follows — 1 foot = 12 × 25.4 mm = 304.8 mm; 1 yard = 3 × 304.8 mm = 914.4 mm; 1 mile = 5,280 × 304.8 mm = 1,609,344 mm; 1 km = 1,000,000 mm; 1 cm = 10 mm; 1 µm = 0.001 mm.

Because all factors are exact (no approximations in the definitions), converting first to mm and then to another unit introduces zero additional error compared with a direct conversion. This makes mm a useful common intermediate unit when going between metric and imperial.
