How this is calculated
The buy-side cost has three components: the one-off printer purchase, recurring annual maintenance (nozzle replacements, bed surfaces, lubricant, electricity), and filament consumed each year at its per-kilogram price. The outsource-side cost is simply the service's per-kilogram price multiplied by the annual print volume and the number of years. The figures used here are 2025 estimates for reference — update them with your real quotes.
The breakeven year is the point at which cumulative buying costs equal cumulative outsourcing costs: Breakeven = Printer_cost / ((Outsource_price − Filament_price) × Annual_volume − Annual_maintenance). If the outsource price per kg is not significantly higher than your filament price (after accounting for maintenance), buying may never pay off.
The analysis ignores opportunity cost of capital, the value of your time setting up and operating the printer, learning curve costs, print failures and waste. Low-volume users or those who only occasionally need unusual materials typically find outsourcing more cost-effective; high-volume producers or frequent iterators typically benefit from ownership within 1–3 years.
