How does this calculator work?
Weekly gross for a 12-hour shift worker = (regular hours × base rate) + (overtime hours × 1.5 × base rate) + night differential. Under federal FLSA, OT starts after 40 h/week; under California's daily rule, every 12-hour shift includes 4 OT hours. Multiply weekly gross by 52/12 for a monthly estimate.
Formula
How this is calculated
A 12-hour shift schedule (e.g. 3 shifts on / 4 off, or a 2-2-3 rotating pattern) produces 36 hours per week on a 3-shift schedule. Under the US federal Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA), overtime is paid at 1.5× for hours beyond 40 per week. In California and several other states, the daily overtime rule triggers 1.5× for any hours beyond 8 in a single workday — meaning every 12-hour shift includes 4 hours of overtime regardless of weekly total.
A night-shift differential is an extra percentage added to the base hourly rate for shifts that fall entirely or substantially during overnight hours. Differentials of 5–15% are common in healthcare and manufacturing. This calculator applies the differential to all hours of designated night shifts and compounds it with the overtime multiplier for any OT hours worked on night shifts.
Monthly and annual estimates use 52 weeks per year (52 / 12 ≈ 4.333 weeks per month). These figures are gross pay before income tax, FICA, health insurance or any other deductions. State income tax and local rules vary; consult your payroll provider or HR department for net-pay estimates.
Frequently asked questions
Under the daily OT rule (California etc.), yes: every 12-hour shift generates 4 hours of overtime (hours 9–12), regardless of total weekly hours. Under the federal weekly rule, a 3×12 schedule (36 h/week) generates no overtime — you need more than 40 hours in the week before OT kicks in.
Healthcare night-shift differentials typically range from 10–20% above base pay. Manufacturing and warehouse roles often pay 5–15%. Some employers instead pay a flat per-hour premium (e.g. $2–$4/h) rather than a percentage — enter the equivalent percentage in the differential field.
Monthly gross = weekly gross × 52 / 12, since there are 52 weeks in a year. Annual gross = weekly × 52. These assume the same schedule year-round. Actual pay may differ for shift rotations that change weekly, or for unpaid weeks (e.g. furlough, leave without pay).
