Overtime Calculator — OT Pay for Any Threshold and Multiplier
Calculate overtime pay for any hourly rate and hours worked — set your own overtime threshold (not just 40 hours) and multiplier (not just 1.5×) to match your employment contract or local law.

How does this calculator work?
Overtime pay = hourly rate × multiplier × hours above the threshold. US federal standard: threshold = 40 hrs/week, multiplier = 1.5 (time and a half). Total gross = (rate × regular hours) + (rate × 1.5 × overtime hours). Enter your own threshold and multiplier to match any contract or state rule.
Formula
How this is calculated
Overtime law sets a threshold: hours worked beyond it in a pay period must be compensated at a premium rate. Under the US federal Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA), the threshold is 40 hours per workweek and the minimum multiplier is 1.5 (time and a half). Some states, industries or union agreements use different thresholds (e.g., 8 hours per day in California) or higher multipliers (e.g., double time at 12+ hours/day in some states).
This calculator lets you customise both. Regular pay covers the hours up to the threshold; overtime pay applies the multiplier to all hours beyond it. The total is their sum — all figures are gross (before tax). The effective hourly rate shows your blended rate across all hours, which is useful for comparing weekly earnings under different schedules.
Note that different overtime rules may apply to salaried employees, executives, administrators and professionals who meet certain exemption thresholds under FLSA. This calculator models the standard hourly-worker case. Consult your employer or a local labour authority for jurisdiction-specific rules.
Frequently asked questions
The US federal FLSA requires at least 1.5 times (time and a half) the regular rate for hours over 40 in a workweek. Some states set higher rates — for example California requires double time for hours over 12 per day — and union contracts may differ.
Under the US federal FLSA, overtime is calculated weekly (over 40 hours per 7-day workweek). Several states including California, Nevada and Alaska also require daily overtime after 8 hours in a workday. Adjust the threshold and your hours to match whichever rule applies to you.
Overtime pay is subject to the same income tax rates as regular wages — there is no special "overtime tax". However, a higher week's gross pay can push more of your income into a higher tax bracket temporarily, which may result in higher withholding on that pay cheque. Your annual tax liability depends on your full-year income.
