How does this calculator work?
Net paycheck = gross pay − income tax − FICA (7.65%) − other deductions. Gross = (rate × regular hours) + (rate × OT multiplier × overtime hours). Enter your hourly rate, hours, estimated combined tax rate and deductions to see take-home pay and an annual estimate.
Formula
How this is calculated
The calculator first builds your gross pay from two components: regular hours at the base rate, and overtime hours at the rate multiplied by your overtime multiplier (typically 1.5 for time and a half, or 2.0 for double time). Gross pay = (rate × regular hours) + (rate × multiplier × overtime hours).
From gross pay, three classes of deductions are subtracted. The income tax estimate uses the percentage you enter — enter your combined federal and state marginal rate for the most accurate estimate; a common US federal bracket for middle incomes is 22%. FICA (Federal Insurance Contributions Act) is added automatically at the 2024 employee rate of 7.65% (6.2% Social Security + 1.45% Medicare). Other deductions cover fixed per-period amounts such as health insurance premiums or 401(k) contributions.
Results are estimates: actual withholding depends on your W-4 allowances, year-to-date earnings (Social Security caps at $168,600 for 2024), state-specific rules and other factors. Consult your pay stub or a payroll professional for precise figures.
Frequently asked questions
FICA (Federal Insurance Contributions Act) covers Social Security (6.2%) and Medicare (1.45%) taxes — a combined 7.65% employee share. Yes, FICA applies to overtime pay at the same rate. Social Security has an annual wage base limit ($168,600 for 2024); Medicare has no cap.
Your federal marginal rate depends on your filing status and taxable income: 10%, 12%, 22%, 24%, 32%, 35% or 37% for 2024. Add your state income tax rate to get the combined marginal rate. For a rough estimate, many full-time US workers use 22–24% federal plus 3–9% state.
Not by a special "overtime tax" — all wages are taxed at the same income-tax rates. However, a pay period with overtime will have higher gross pay, which may push some of those dollars into a higher bracket and result in more withholding for that cheque. Your actual full-year tax is based on total annual income.
