Quick answer

How does this calculator work?

APY requires you to contribute monthly from age 18–39 to build a corpus (≈ ₹170 × monthly pension) by age 60; that corpus then pays the guaranteed pension for life. Monthly contribution ≈ corpus × (r/12) / ((1+r/12)^n − 1) at 8% p.a. Verify exact amounts on the official PFRDA portal — figures are estimates based on 2024 APY contribution tables.

Formula
Monthly contribution = (Target corpus × r_monthly) / ((1 + r_monthly)^n − 1) where corpus = pension × 170, r_monthly = annual_rate / 12, n = months to age 60
How this is calculated

APY is administered by the Pension Fund Regulatory and Development Authority (PFRDA) under the National Pension System (NPS) framework. Upon enrolment, a subscriber chooses a target monthly pension (₹1,000 / ₹2,000 / ₹3,000 / ₹4,000 / ₹5,000) and contributes monthly until age 60, after which the pension is paid for life. The nominee receives the corpus on the subscriber's death.

The PFRDA publishes official contribution tables that map age at joining and pension target to a fixed monthly amount. These are derived from an actuarial calculation that assumes 8% annual returns on the NPS corpus and uses a corpus target of roughly ₹170 per ₹1 of monthly pension (e.g. ₹1,70,000 for ₹1,000/month). This calculator reproduces that method: it derives the required corpus, then back-solves for the monthly SIP payment using the standard future-value annuity formula. Results are estimates that closely approximate the official table; the "Expected annual return" field lets you explore sensitivity to return assumptions.

Note: contributions made before 31 March 2016 attracted a government co-contribution of 50% (up to ₹1,000/year) for eligible subscribers. Government co-contribution is no longer available for new enrolments. Entry is open only to Indian citizens aged 18–39 with a savings bank account.

Frequently asked questions

Any Indian citizen aged 18–39 with a savings bank account or post office savings account and a valid mobile number is eligible. The subscriber must not be a member of any statutory social security scheme such as EPF. The minimum subscription period is 20 years (maximum entry age is therefore 39).

Voluntary premature exit before 60 is allowed only in exceptional circumstances (terminal illness, death of spouse). The subscriber receives only the contributions made plus the actual investment returns — the government guarantee does not apply on premature exit.

This calculator uses the PFRDA's corpus targets (₹170 per ₹1 monthly pension) and the standard SIP formula at an 8% annual return — the same assumptions underlying the official table. Results will closely match the official contribution chart. Small differences may arise from rounding or actuarial adjustments. Always confirm the exact contribution with your bank or via the official APY portal at npscra.nsdl.co.in.
