Quick answer

How does this calculator work?

To split a bill, add tax (subtotal × tax%) and tip (subtotal × tip%) to the subtotal to get the total, then divide by the number of people. For a $120 bill with 8% tax and 18% tip across 4 people, each pays about $37.80.

Formula
per person = (subtotal + subtotal × tax% / 100 + subtotal × tip% / 100) ÷ people
How this is calculated

Enter the bill subtotal (the pre-tax, pre-tip amount), the tax rate as a percentage, the tip rate as a percentage, and the number of people sharing the bill. Tax is computed as subtotal × tax% / 100 and tip as subtotal × tip% / 100. In most regions tip is conventionally calculated on the pre-tax subtotal, which is the convention used here.

The grand total is subtotal + tax + tip, and the per-person share is that total divided by the number of people. The number of people must be at least 1, and the subtotal cannot be negative; otherwise the result is undefined and a warning is shown.

All currency values are shown rounded to two decimal places for display. Note that rounding each person's share independently can leave a few cents of difference from the exact total, so one person may need to cover the rounding remainder in practice.

Frequently asked questions

This calculator applies the tip to the pre-tax subtotal, which is the most common convention. If you prefer to tip on the post-tax amount, add the tax into the subtotal first.

No, this tool divides the total evenly. For uneven splits, compute each item separately and add a proportional share of tax and tip.

Each share is rounded to two decimals for display, so the sum of rounded shares can differ from the exact total by a cent or two.
