How does this calculator work?
Divide height (cm) by wrist circumference (cm). Men: r > 10.4 = small, 9.6–10.4 = medium, r < 9.6 = large. Women: r > 11.0 = small, 10.1–11.0 = medium, r < 10.1 = large. Ideal weight adjusts roughly ±10% from the Hamwi base. Measure wrist at the narrowest point just below the wrist bone.

How this is calculated
The height-to-wrist ratio (r = height ÷ wrist circumference, both in cm) is the most practical self-measurement method for determining body frame size. The wrist contains no significant muscle or fat, so its circumference reflects bone density and joint size more directly than most other body measurements. A higher ratio means the wrist is narrow relative to height (small frame); a lower ratio means broader proportionally (large frame).
The cutpoints used here are adapted from Metropolitan Life Insurance Company reference tables (widely cited in clinical dietetics since the 1980s). Men and women use different thresholds because women have proportionally narrower wrists at the same height. Measure the wrist at its narrowest point just below the bony wrist process (styloid process) — about where a watch band sits — with a flexible tape pulled snugly but not compressing the skin.
The estimated ideal weight range is calculated from the Hamwi formula (1964): 48 kg + 2.7 lb per inch above 5 ft for men; 45.5 kg + 2.2 lb per inch for women; then adjusted ±10% for frame size (small = −10%, large = +10%). These are rough orientation figures, not clinical targets. Body composition, age, muscle mass and ethnicity all influence a healthy weight independently of frame size.

Yes. People with larger frames carry more bone and joint mass, so an appropriate body weight is slightly higher than for the same height with a smaller frame. Most ideal-weight guidelines adjust upwards ~10% for a large frame and downwards ~10% for a small frame relative to the medium-frame reference.
It is practical for self-measurement and consistent with published tables. Elbow breadth measured with sliding calipers is considered the most accurate frame indicator, but requires specialist equipment. Wrist circumference alone (without dividing by height) is another common method that uses separate cutpoints for different height brackets.
