Quick answer

How does this calculator work?

Ideal burn rate = total story points ÷ sprint days. Actual burn rate = points done ÷ days elapsed. Remaining work = total + added scope − completed. Projected completion = remaining ÷ actual burn rate. If that date falls after the sprint end, the team is behind by the difference.

Formula
Ideal burn/day = Total ÷ Sprint days • Actual burn/day = Done ÷ Days elapsed • Runway = Remaining ÷ Actual burn/day
How this is calculated

A burndown chart plots remaining work (story points, tasks, or hours) against time. The ideal burndown is a straight line from total story points on day 0 to zero on the last day of the sprint, representing a perfectly constant velocity. The actual burndown shows how work is really being completed.

This calculator takes the sprint's starting backlog, any mid-sprint scope additions, and the actual points completed so far to compute the current remaining work and the actual burn rate (points per day). It then projects how many total days the sprint will take at that rate. If the projected total exceeds the sprint length, the sprint is behind schedule by that many days.

Scope creep (story points added mid-sprint) is tracked separately so you can see its direct impact on the remaining work. The calculator does not model day-to-day fluctuations or non-working days — for those, use your team's agile tool (Jira, Linear, Azure DevOps) which can pull actual hourly data.

Frequently asked questions

A burndown chart is a project management tool — common in Scrum agile development — that shows the amount of work remaining in a sprint on the y-axis and the days of the sprint on the x-axis. The ideal line goes from the total work at day 0 to zero at the last day. The actual line shows real progress, revealing whether the team is ahead or behind.

Story points are a unit of estimation used by agile teams to measure the effort or complexity of a task. When a task is completed (accepted), its story points are "burned" — removed from the remaining backlog. Burning more points per day than the ideal rate means the team is ahead of schedule.

Mid-sprint additions raise the remaining work above the ideal line, making the sprint harder to complete on time. The calculator tracks added scope separately so you can see its impact. Best practice in Scrum is to not add scope mid-sprint; if it is unavoidable, remove an equivalent number of lower-priority stories.
