How does this calculator work?
Caffeine peaks ~45 min after drinking and decays exponentially with a typical half-life of 5 hours: remaining = intake × 0.5^(hours_elapsed / half-life). A 95 mg cup drunk at 8 AM drops to ~25 mg around 6 PM. Adjust the half-life (3–7 h is a normal adult range) and drink time to find your ideal cut-off for a 10 PM bedtime.

How this is calculated
Caffeine is absorbed quickly through the gut. Blood plasma levels peak roughly 30–60 minutes after ingestion (the calculator uses a 45-minute midpoint). From peak, the body eliminates caffeine through hepatic metabolism following an exponential decay: the amount remaining is C_peak × 0.5^(elapsed / half-life). The default half-life of 5 hours means that 5 hours after peak only half remains, after 10 hours just a quarter, and after 15 hours an eighth.
Half-life varies widely between individuals. Healthy non-smoking adults average 4–6 hours; smokers metabolise caffeine about twice as fast (~3 h); pregnant women and those on certain medications (some contraceptives, some antidepressants) can reach 10–12 hours. A common sleep-quality guideline is to keep residual caffeine below about 100 mg at bedtime (some sources say 50 mg). Most pharmacokinetic studies report a peak plasma concentration between 30 and 60 minutes after oral intake. The 45-minute midpoint is a practical average for a healthy adult on an empty-to-light stomach. A large meal can slow absorption, shifting the peak 15–30 minutes later.
Caffeine half-life is primarily controlled by how quickly your liver's CYP1A2 enzyme metabolises it. Smoking, genetics (fast vs slow metaboliser variants), body weight, liver health and concurrent medications all affect this. The field is editable so you can dial in your personal experience.
There is no universal threshold, but 25 mg is a commonly cited level where stimulant effects are generally below the detectable or performance-relevant range for most adults. Sleep researchers often use 100 mg as the "begin to impair sleep onset" threshold.
