How this is calculated
Converting volume to weight requires knowing the material's density — mass per unit volume. Multiplying cubic feet by the density in pounds per cubic foot gives the weight in pounds directly. The density values listed (2025 reference values) are typical bulk densities for each material: water is 62.43 lb/ft³ at room temperature, structural concrete is commonly 150 lb/ft³, dry sand around 100 lb/ft³, and steel 490 lb/ft³.
These are bulk (average) densities. Real-world materials vary with moisture content, compaction, mix design and temperature. Wet sand weighs about 20% more than dry sand; compacted soil can exceed 100 lb/ft³ while loose topsoil is closer to 75 lb/ft³. For precise engineering or shipping calculations, measure or source the actual density from a lab or material data sheet and enter it using the "Custom density" option.
