Formula
How this is calculated
Every volume unit is defined by a fixed conversion factor relative to one shared base unit, the litre. Each factor (toBase) is the number of litres in a single unit: 1 millilitre is 0.001 L, 1 cubic metre is 1000 L, 1 US gallon is exactly 3.785411784 L, and 1 imperial (UK) gallon is 4.54609 L. These are exact definitions, not approximations.
To convert, the tool first multiplies your input value by the source unit's factor to express it in litres, then divides by the target unit's factor to express that litre amount in the destination unit. In one step: value_to = value_from x (toBase_from / toBase_to). Swapping the two units simply inverts the ratio.
Results are rounded to a fixed number of decimal places for display, so converting back and forth can introduce tiny rounding differences. The most common pitfall is mixing measurement systems: US and imperial gallons, quarts and fluid ounces differ in size (a US gallon is about 20% smaller than an imperial one), so always confirm which system a recipe or spec intends.
About this calculator
Volume measures three-dimensional capacity. The metric system uses liters and cubic meters, while the US customary and imperial systems use gallons, quarts, pints, cups and fluid ounces. Note that US and imperial gallons differ: a US gallon is 3.785411784 liters while an imperial (UK) gallon is 4.54609 liters.
This converter uses the liter as its base unit. One cubic meter equals 1000 liters and one cubic centimeter equals one milliliter. It is ideal for recipes, fuel volumes, container sizing and laboratory measurements.
Frequently asked questions
