How this is calculated
Every area unit is defined by a fixed factor that converts it into one common base unit: the square meter (m2). A square millimeter is 0.000001 m2, a hectare is exactly 10,000 m2, an acre is 4046.8564224 m2, a square foot is 0.09290304 m2, and a square mile is 2,589,988.110336 m2. These factors come from internationally agreed definitions of the metre, foot, and yard, so the conversions are exact rather than approximate.
The conversion runs in two steps. First the value you enter is multiplied by the "from" unit's factor to express it in square meters. That base value is then divided by the "to" unit's factor to land in the target unit. In short: result = value x (factor_from / factor_to). Swapping the two units simply inverts the ratio.
Areas scale with the square of length, so a unit that is 3.28 times longer in one dimension is about 10.76 times larger in area. Results are rounded for display (default six significant digits), which can introduce tiny rounding differences; the underlying calculation uses the full exact factors.
