DIY Shed Cost Calculator
Estimate how much it will cost to build a DIY shed. Enter the dimensions and your local material prices — framing lumber, roofing, siding, flooring and hardware — to get a total and a category-by-category breakdown.

How does this calculator work?
Multiply floor area by framing and flooring costs, wall area by siding cost, and roof area (floor × 1.15 for pitch) by roofing cost, then add hardware. Defaults use 2025 US material averages; edit unit prices to match local quotes. Material cost only — add 40–60% for professional labour if you are not building it yourself.
Formula
How this is calculated
The calculator derives three key areas from your shed dimensions: floor area (width × depth), wall area (2 × (width + depth) × wall height, covering all four walls), and roof area (floor area × 1.15 to account for a modest pitch and overhang). Each area is then multiplied by its per-unit material cost to produce a cost line. Hardware and miscellaneous costs (fasteners, hangers, door hardware, paint, caulk) are added as a fixed budget.
The default per-unit prices are rough US national averages for 2025 and are fully editable — regional lumber prices, local building-material costs and your choice of materials (pressure-treated vs standard lumber, shingles vs metal roofing, T1-11 vs LP SmartSide siding) can all shift the total significantly. Update the unit prices to match your local quotes for the most accurate estimate.
This calculator covers material costs only. Labour adds roughly 40–60% if you hire professionals; a skilled DIYer building a simple shed typically pays materials only. It does not include a concrete slab or gravel pad foundation, permits (typically $50–$200 depending on jurisdiction), or any electrical or plumbing rough-in.
Frequently asked questions
No — the calculator covers structural materials only. Foundation options range from skids on compacted gravel (~$100–300 DIY) to a concrete slab (~$4–8 per sq ft poured) or concrete blocks. Add your foundation cost to the total.
Permit requirements and fees vary by municipality. Many jurisdictions exempt sheds under a certain size (often 100–200 sq ft) from permits; larger structures typically require one. Fees are commonly $50–$200 but can be higher. Check with your local building department.
A simple sloped shed roof has more surface area than the floor footprint: a low-pitch (2:12) roof adds about 5%, and overhangs add further. The 1.15 factor is a conservative estimate for a basic single-pitch or gable roof. Steeper pitches or larger overhangs will require more roofing material.
