Quick answer

How do you calculate square footage?

Multiply the length by the width of the space, using the same unit for both. For example, a room 12 ft long and 10 ft wide is 12 × 10 = 120 square feet. To convert to square metres, multiply square feet by 0.0929; to go the other way, multiply square metres by 10.7639.

Formula
Area = Length × Width • 1 ft² = 0.09290304 m²
How this is calculated

The calculator treats the space as a rectangle and multiplies the two side measurements: Area = Length × Width. Length and Width must be entered in the same unit — either feet or metres, chosen with the unit toggle. The result is the area in that same unit (square feet or square metres), so the units multiply too: feet × feet gives ft², metres × metres gives m².

It then converts the area to the other system using the exact definition 1 foot = 0.3048 metres, which makes 1 ft² = 0.3048² = 0.09290304 m² (and 1 m² ≈ 10.7639 ft²). Both figures are shown so you can read whichever you need. If you enter an optional price per unit area, the total cost is simply area × price, computed in the unit you typed in — it is not converted, so match the price unit to your length and width.

Assumptions and limits: the shape is a single rectangle, so L-shaped or irregular rooms must be split into rectangles and added. Negative or non-numeric inputs are ignored, a blank price yields no cost, and displayed values are rounded to two decimals while the underlying math stays full-precision.

About this calculator

Square footage is the area of a rectangular space, found by multiplying its length by its width. Enter both measurements in the same unit — feet or metres — and the calculator returns the area in that unit as well as in the other system, since 1 ft² equals 0.09290304 m² (and 1 m² ≈ 10.7639 ft²).

This is handy for flooring, carpet, turf, paint, tiling and any project priced per square foot or square metre. Add an optional price per unit area to get an instant total cost. For non-rectangular rooms, split the floor into rectangles, find each area, and add them together.

Frequently asked questions

Multiply the square footage by 0.09290304. So 120 ft² × 0.0929 ≈ 11.15 m². To convert square metres back to square feet, multiply by about 10.7639.

Split it into rectangular sections, calculate the area of each (length × width), and add the areas together for the total square footage.

Enter a price per unit area in the same unit you used for length and width. The cost equals the area multiplied by that price.
