Calories burned on an elliptical = MET × weight (kg) × time (hours). MET ranges from 4.9 (light) to 9.5 (near max effort). A 70 kg person at moderate effort (MET 5.7) for 30 minutes burns roughly 100 kcal. Actual values vary by individual fitness, resistance and stride rate.

How this is calculated
Calorie expenditure during exercise is estimated using Metabolic Equivalent of Task (MET) values from the Compendium of Physical Activities. A MET of 1 equals the energy used at rest; an elliptical at moderate effort has a MET of approximately 5.7, meaning it burns 5.7 times the resting rate. The formula Calories = MET × weight(kg) × hours converts that to kilocalories burned during the session.
MET values for an elliptical trainer range from about 4.9 (light, easy pace) through 5.7 (moderate, typical gym session) to 9.5 (near maximum effort with high resistance). Body weight matters because heavier individuals use more energy to move against gravity and inertia, even on a no-impact machine like an elliptical.
Limitations: this formula gives gross calories including the resting metabolic rate already accounted for during exercise. Net additional calories are slightly lower. Individual fitness level, exact stride rate, machine resistance and incline can shift the real figure by ±15–20%. For precise measurements, a heart-rate monitor or calibrated fitness tracker is more accurate. MET values used are from the 2011 update of the Compendium of Physical Activities.
Frequently asked questions
Running has a MET of roughly 8–12 depending on pace — higher than all but the most intense elliptical sessions. However, because the elliptical is low-impact (no repeated heel strike), users can often sustain it longer or at higher resistance without joint fatigue, which can offset some of the per-minute calorie difference. Both provide effective cardio.
Yes — actively pushing and pulling the handles engages the upper body and increases overall muscle recruitment. This can add roughly 5–10% to calorie burn compared to passive handle use. This calculator does not directly model handle usage, but selecting a higher intensity level roughly accounts for it.
The MET formula scales linearly with body mass because a heavier person must do more mechanical work to accelerate and decelerate their limbs with each stride. A 100 kg person burns roughly 43% more calories than a 70 kg person at the same speed and duration, directly from the weight ratio.
