Quick answer

How does this calculator work?

Pace (min/km) = total minutes ÷ distance (km). Enter your distance and finish time to get pace in mm:ss format, your equivalent speed in km/h or mph, and projected finish times for 5K, 10K, half-marathon and marathon at that effort level.

Formula
Pace = Time (minutes) ÷ Distance • Speed = Distance ÷ Time (hours)
How this is calculated

Pace is the time it takes to cover one unit of distance — typically expressed in minutes and seconds per kilometre (min/km) or minutes and seconds per mile (min/mi). The calculation converts your total run time into minutes, then divides by the distance to get the decimal pace, which is formatted as mm:ss for readability.

Speed (km/h or mph) is the reciprocal view — distance divided by time in hours. The calculator also cross-converts your pace to the other unit (km ↔ miles) so you can compare with athletes using different conventions. The race projections assume you maintain the same effort all the way — in practice, fatigue, terrain and conditions will vary your actual finish time.

The XY chart shows distance on the horizontal axis and elapsed time on the vertical axis. At a constant pace the relationship is perfectly linear; the labelled dots mark 5K, 10K, half and full marathon milestones so you can read off finish times at a glance.

Frequently asked questions

A recreational 5K runner typically runs at 6–7 min/km (9:40–11:15 min/mi). Elite marathon runners hold about 2:49 min/km (4:33 min/mi). Your "good" pace depends on your experience, distance and goals — consistent improvement matters more than an absolute target.

Speed (km/h) = 60 ÷ pace (min/km). For example, a pace of 5:00 min/km equals 60 ÷ 5 = 12 km/h. To convert mph: Speed (mph) = 60 ÷ pace (min/mi). The calculator does both conversions automatically.

The projection assumes perfectly even splits at the entered pace. Real races involve warm-up, terrain changes, fuelling stops, fatigue and pacing strategy. Use the projection as a target range, not a guaranteed result.
