How does this calculator work?
Estimate VO₂ max using the Cooper test (VO₂max = (distance_m − 504.9) / 44.73), Rockport walk test, or resting heart rate method (15 × HRmax / HRrest). Results in mL/kg/min are compared with ACSM age- and sex-specific norms ranging from Poor to Excellent. Lab-grade accuracy requires a graded exercise test.

How this is calculated
VO₂ max (maximal oxygen uptake) is the maximum rate at which the body can consume oxygen during intense exercise, expressed in millilitres of oxygen per kilogram of body weight per minute (mL/kg/min). It is the best single indicator of cardiovascular fitness and aerobic endurance.
This calculator offers three estimation methods. The Cooper 12-minute run test (Cooper 1968) is the simplest: run as far as possible in 12 minutes on a flat surface, measure the distance, and apply the formula VO₂max = (d − 504.9) / 44.73, where d is in metres. The Rockport 1-mile walk test (Kline et al. 1987) is better suited to older adults or those who cannot run: walk 1 mile at a brisk, steady pace, record the time in minutes and the heart rate immediately after finishing, then apply the regression equation that also accounts for weight, age and sex. The resting heart rate method (Fox 1973) uses only age and resting HR and produces a rougher estimate: VO₂max ≈ 15 × (HRmax / HRrest), where HRmax is approximated as 220 − age.
Fitness categories are based on ACSM (American College of Sports Medicine) 2022 norms, which vary by age and sex. All field-test methods produce estimates with standard errors of roughly 3–5 mL/kg/min compared with laboratory gold-standard measurement (incremental treadmill or cycle ergometer test with expired-gas analysis). The resting HR method has the largest error. Results are best used to track trends over time rather than for absolute fitness classification.
