How this is calculated

The Epworth Sleepiness Scale asks you to rate the chance of dozing off or falling asleep in eight ordinary situations using a 4-point scale: 0 = would never doze, 1 = slight chance, 2 = moderate chance, 3 = high chance. The eight situations were specifically chosen to vary in their soporific tendency — from low (talking to someone) to high (lying down to rest) — covering a range where both sleepy and alert individuals can be differentiated. You should rate each situation based on your general recent experience, even if you have not been in that exact situation recently.

The total score ranges from 0 to 24. The original validation by Johns (1991) defined 0–9 as normal and 10–24 as excessive daytime sleepiness (EDS). Subsequent refinements by the same author split the range further: 0–5 lower normal, 6–10 higher normal, 11–12 mild EDS, 13–15 moderate EDS, and 16–24 severe EDS. Scores above 10 are associated with conditions such as obstructive sleep apnea, narcolepsy, hypersomnia, and insufficient sleep syndrome, and should trigger further clinical evaluation including, where appropriate, polysomnography.

The ESS is a screening tool, not a diagnostic instrument, and results can be influenced by factors such as depression, sedating medications, shift work, or age.
