Fence Cost Calculator — Estimate Fencing Project Cost
Estimate how much a fence will cost by entering the total length, material type, post spacing, gate count and labor rate. See the total and a breakdown of material, post, gate and labor costs.

How does this calculator work?
Fence cost = (length × $/ft × waste factor) + (posts × post cost) + (gates × gate cost) + (length × labor/ft). US 2026 estimates: wood ~$15/ft material; vinyl ~$25/ft; chain-link ~$12/ft. DIY saves the labor portion (often $8–15/ft). Add 10% waste for material orders.
Formula
How this is calculated
Fencing costs fall into four main buckets: fence material (panels, boards or mesh), posts, gates, and labor. This calculator multiplies the net fencing length (total run minus rough gate openings) by the per-linear-foot material cost, then applies a waste factor — typically 10–15% for cutting and offcuts. Posts are counted as ⌈length ÷ spacing⌉ + 1 (one at each junction plus the two ends); the typical 8 ft spacing gives posts roughly every 2.4 m. Post cost covers material only; concrete footings and hardware add extra that varies by site. Gates are priced individually. Labor is entered as a cost per linear foot of total run — set it to zero for a DIY build.
Cost defaults are 2026 US market estimates for common materials: wood roughly $12–20/ft, vinyl $22–30/ft, chain-link $10–15/ft, aluminium $25–35/ft, and composite $30–40/ft. These vary widely by region, panel height, and supplier, so replace them with your actual quotes for a reliable budget. Permit fees, concrete, gravel, post caps, and hardware are not included.
The donut chart shows how the total budget splits across the four cost categories, helping you see where the money goes and where savings are possible (for example, reducing gate count, choosing a longer post spacing, or going DIY on labor).
Frequently asked questions
Installed cost varies by material and region, but US averages in 2026 range roughly from $10–15/ft for chain-link up to $30–50/ft for composite or aluminium, including labor. Wood privacy fences typically fall in the $18–30/ft installed range.
For a straight run, divide the total length by the post spacing and round up, then add one. For example a 100 ft run with 8 ft spacing needs ⌈100 ÷ 8⌉ + 1 = 13 + 1 = 14 posts. Add posts for each gate, corner or change of direction.
Fence boards, panels and mesh are cut to fit and any off-cuts are wasted. For board-and-rail fences a 10% waste allowance is typical; complex layouts or non-standard spacings may need 15%. Round up when ordering to avoid a mid-project shortfall.
