Formula
How this is calculated
Your overall grade is a weighted average of two parts: the work already graded and the final exam. The exam weight (a percentage) is the share the final contributes, so the remaining work counts for the rest, i.e. (1 − Weight ÷ 100). Multiplying your current grade by that remaining share gives the points it locks in toward the final total.
To find the score you still need, the target grade is reduced by those already-secured points, then divided by the exam's share (Weight ÷ 100) to scale it back up to an exam-only percentage. Every value is treated as a plain percentage from 0 to 100, and the maths assumes the final is the only graded item left.
The result can fall outside 0–100: above 100% means the target is unreachable from the final alone (you would need extra credit), while 0% or below means the target is already locked in no matter how the exam goes. A zero or blank exam weight leaves the answer undefined, since you cannot divide by a final that counts for nothing.
About this calculator
Before a final exam, you usually know your current standing and how much the exam is worth. This calculator rearranges the weighted-average formula to tell you precisely what percentage you must score on the final to finish with your target overall grade. Your current grade covers everything completed so far; the exam weight is the slice of the final grade the exam represents.
If the required score comes out above 100%, the target is out of reach from the final alone — you would need extra credit or a different goal. If it comes out at or below 0%, you have already secured the target regardless of how the final goes.
Frequently asked questions
It is your weighted average across everything graded so far, excluding the final exam itself.
Your target cannot be reached from the final exam alone — consider a more realistic goal or any available extra credit.
Check your syllabus or course outline; it lists the percentage each component, including the final, contributes to the overall grade.
