How does this calculator work?
Weight of fire glass = fill rate × area × depth. Standard 1/2-inch fire glass: 1 lb per sq ft per inch of depth. Fine glass uses 0.75 lb/sq ft/in; large glass 1.25 lb/sq ft/in. Buy 10–15% extra for settling. Recommended fill depth: 1–3 inches (2.5–7.5 cm) above the burner.
Formula
How this is calculated
Decorative fire glass (also called fire beads or fire rocks) is crushed, tumbled tempered glass used as a media layer over gas burners in outdoor fire pits and indoor gas fireplaces. The glass radiates heat from the burner flame, distributing heat evenly and creating an attractive glowing effect without the soot or ash of wood fires.
The required quantity is calculated from the pit's surface area and desired fill depth. The standard industry fill rate for 1/2-inch (standard) fire glass is approximately 1 pound per square foot per inch of depth — meaning a 3 ft² pit filled to 2 inches deep needs about 6 lbs. Smaller glass (1/4 inch) packs more tightly and weighs slightly less per volume (~0.75 lb/sq ft/in); larger glass (3/4 inch) weighs slightly more (~1.25 lb/sq ft/in).
Most suppliers recommend a fill depth of 1–3 inches (2.5–7.5 cm). Shallower fills may expose the burner; deeper fills are largely aesthetic and waste glass. Always purchase 10–15% more than calculated to account for glass settling over time and topping up as needed. This calculator supports rectangular and circular/round fire pits and gives results in US pounds and kilograms for international users.
Frequently asked questions
Fire glass is made from tempered (safety) glass that has been crushed and tumbled smooth to remove sharp edges. The tempering process makes it resistant to the heat of a gas flame. It does not burn, produce smoke, or create soot. It is designed specifically for use with natural gas or propane burners — never use ordinary glass, which can shatter dangerously when heated.
The most common recommendation is 1–2 inches (2.5–5 cm) for a propane burner and 2–3 inches (5–7.5 cm) for a natural gas burner. The glass should fully cover the burner pan with at least half an inch to one inch above the burner ports. Overfilling (more than 3–4 inches) restricts gas flow, can cause uneven burning, and wastes glass without adding meaningful heat or aesthetics.
Yes — mixing colours is popular and perfectly safe. Calculate the total weight needed, then split that weight across the colours you want. Mixing proportions are purely aesthetic. Some installers place a single colour at the base and a contrasting colour on top for a layered look.
