How does this calculator work?
Number of joists = ceiling(room length × 12 / OC spacing) + 1. Total LF = joists × span × (1 + waste %). Board feet add the actual 1.5 in × joist depth cross-section. Enter room length, joist span, OC spacing, and depth to get a full material count with optional cost.

How this is calculated
Floor joists are the horizontal framing members that support the subfloor sheathing. They run parallel to each other across the shorter dimension of the room (the span), and are spaced at a regular on-center (OC) interval along the longer dimension. The number of joists equals the ceiling of (room length in inches divided by the OC spacing) plus one closing joist at the far end.
Total linear footage is the number of joists multiplied by the span. A waste allowance — typically 10 % for a straightforward rectangular room — is then added to cover end cuts, rejected boards, and future replacements. Board feet are derived from the actual cross-section: a nominal 2×10 has actual dimensions of 1.5 × 9.25 inches, so BF = 1.5 × actual depth × total LF / 12.
This calculator assumes a flat, rectangular floor bay with uniform OC spacing and solid-sawn lumber of standard 2× thickness. Cantilevers, openings for stairs, doubled joists around penetrations, and engineered-lumber alternatives (LVL, I-joist) require additional planning. Always verify joist sizing against your local span tables — the 2021 IRC Table R502.3 is the standard US reference — or consult a structural engineer.
Frequently asked questions
16 inches on center is the most common residential spacing in the US because it aligns with standard 4×8 sheathing panels. Engineered lumber and thicker subfloor panels may allow 19.2" or 24" OC; 12" OC is used where extra stiffness or heavy loads are required.
Joist depth depends on the span, species, grade, and expected load. The IRC span tables are the standard US reference — for example a 16 ft span at 16" OC typically calls for a 2×10 in Douglas Fir-Larch No. 2. Always verify with local code tables or a structural engineer.
Lumber orders always contain some unusable pieces, end cuts, and occasional rejects. A 10 % allowance is standard for simple rectangular floors; increase to 12–15 % for rooms with multiple openings or angled cuts.
