How does this calculator work?
If a child's birthday falls before the state's kindergarten cutoff (commonly September 1), they start K at age 5 and graduate high school 13 years later. A birthday after the cutoff pushes K — and graduation — one year later. Enter birthday and cutoff to get the exact graduation year instantly.
Formula
How this is calculated
Most US states set a kindergarten enrollment cutoff date — typically September 1 — by which a child must turn 5 to begin kindergarten that fall. If the child's birthday falls before or on the cutoff, they start kindergarten in the fall of the year they turn 5. If their birthday falls after the cutoff, they wait one more year and start at age 5–6.
From the kindergarten start year, graduation from 12th grade follows 13 years later: kindergarten (grade 0) through 12th grade (grade 12) is 13 academic years, and graduation ceremonies happen in the spring after the 12th-grade fall, placing graduation in the 14th calendar year from the K start year. The calculator also reports the student's current (or upcoming fall) grade level.
Cutoff dates vary by state: most use September 1, but several states use October 1, December 1, or December 31. Check your district's rules if the child is near the boundary — local policy may also allow exceptions for "redshirting" (voluntarily delaying a year) or early entry.
Frequently asked questions
It is the date by which a child must have turned 5 to enrol in kindergarten for that academic year. In most US states it is September 1: a child born August 31 can start K that fall, while a child born September 2 must wait until the following year.
Yes. Many parents voluntarily delay kindergarten by one year — especially for children with late-in-the-year birthdays — to give them an extra year of development. This shifts the graduation year by one year and is entirely the family's decision where the district policy allows it.
The K–12 model and September-1 cutoff are US-centric. Other countries use different school structures and entry ages (for example, the UK starts Reception at age 4–5 with a September 1 cutoff but follows a different grade system through Year 13). Use this calculator as a US reference and consult your country's education authority for local rules.
