How does this calculator work?
Divide quilt area by (3√3/2)×s² to get the base hexagon count, then add a waste percentage for border offsets. Add seam allowance to each side of the cut template. Fabric estimate uses the cut hexagon bounding box × piece count ÷ 44-inch bolt width.

How this is calculated
Regular hexagons tile a plane perfectly with no gaps, making them ideal for patchwork quilts. The hexagon "size" in quilting refers to the finished side length (after sewing). The finished area of each hexagon is (3√3/2) × s², and because hexagons tile with 100% packing efficiency, the base count is simply the quilt area divided by one hexagon's area. A waste allowance (typically 10–20%) is added to account for partial hexagons at quilt borders and cutting errors.
Each hexagon must be cut larger than the finished size to allow for seam allowances — the standard is 0.25 inch added to each side. The cut template fits in a bounding box of width 2 × cut_side (vertex to vertex) by height √3 × cut_side (flat to flat). The fabric estimate assumes fabric on a 44-inch-wide bolt, using the bounding box area per hexagon (a conservative estimate — nesting hexagons in strips reduces waste, but this gives a safe purchase quantity).
All measurements use inches — the standard unit in English paper piecing. To work in centimetres, enter cm values for quilt size and hexagon side; the result will be in cm² and you can convert the fabric yards to metres (1 yard ≈ 0.914 m).
Frequently asked questions
In English paper piecing, "size" refers to the length of one side of the finished (sewn) hexagon template. For example, a "1-inch hexagon" has each finished side measuring 1 inch. The cut fabric piece is larger by twice the seam allowance on each side.
A 15–20% waste allowance is typical for hexagon quilts. The edges of the quilt will have partial hexagons that need trimming, and cutting on the grain means some offcuts cannot be reused. The calculator lets you adjust this percentage.
Yes — the total count tells you how many pieces to cut overall. Divide that count by the number of colours/fabrics in your pattern to estimate yardage per fabric. For example, if you need 300 hexagons in 5 equal colours, buy fabric for about 60 cut hexagons per colour.
