How this is calculated

A regular hexagonal prism has two parallel regular-hexagon bases joined by six rectangular side faces. You provide the base edge length a (the side of the hexagon) and the prism height h (the perpendicular distance between the bases). Both must be positive numbers in the same length unit.

The area of a regular hexagon with side a is (3√3/2)·a², and its perimeter is 6a. The volume is the base area multiplied by the height, V = (3√3/2)·a²·h. The lateral (side) surface is the perimeter times the height, 6·a·h, which equals the combined area of the six rectangular faces. The total surface area adds the two hexagonal bases to the lateral area: 2·(3√3/2)·a² + 6·a·h.

The calculator requires a > 0 and h > 0; zero or negative dimensions are rejected because they do not describe a real solid.
