How this is calculated

Kelvin is the SI base unit of thermodynamic temperature, anchored at absolute zero — the lowest possible temperature where particles have minimum thermal energy. Because of this anchor, Kelvin values are always non-negative. The Celsius scale uses the same degree size as Kelvin but shifts the zero point to the freezing point of water, so the conversion is simply a subtraction: °C = K − 273.15.

Fahrenheit uses a different degree size (each Fahrenheit degree is 5/9 of a Celsius degree) and a different zero point, making the conversion a two-step operation: shift from Kelvin to Celsius first, then rescale and offset to Fahrenheit. The Rankine scale keeps Fahrenheit degree sizes but anchors at absolute zero like Kelvin, so °R = K × 9/5 with no additive offset.

Frequently asked questions

0 K = −273.15 °C = −459.67 °F. This is absolute zero, the theoretical lower limit of temperature. It has never been reached experimentally, though laboratories have come within nanokelvins of it.

Kelvin is an SI base unit, not a "degree" scale. It is written as "300 K", not "300 °K". The degree symbol (°) is reserved for Celsius and Fahrenheit, which are offset-based scales.
