The litre (L) is the standard SI volume unit for everyday liquids and is widely used in science, medicine, and commerce. The gallon, however, comes in three distinct definitions — and confusing them is a very common mistake.
The US liquid gallon (the most common in North American everyday use) is defined as exactly 231 cubic inches, which equals exactly 3.785411784 litres. The US dry gallon (used for dry goods such as grain) is 1/8 of a US Winchester bushel = 268.8025 in³ ≈ 4.40488 L and is rarely used in everyday life.
The UK imperial gallon was redefined in 1985 as exactly 4.54609 litres — about 20% larger than the US liquid gallon. This explains why UK petrol (gas) prices look cheap per gallon compared to the US: the UK gallon holds significantly more fuel. When buying fuel, tyres, water tanks, or any volume in an unfamiliar country, always check which gallon definition applies.
