How this is calculated

The labor force participation rate (LFPR) measures the share of the civilian noninstitutional population (CNP) that is either employed or actively seeking employment. The labor force is simply employed + unemployed persons, where "unemployed" means not currently working but actively looking for a job. People who have given up searching or are retired, in school, or disabled and not seeking work are counted as "not in the labor force."

The CNP is the sum of all three groups: employed + unemployed + not in labor force. Dividing the labor force by the CNP and multiplying by 100 gives the LFPR. The unemployment rate is a separate statistic — it measures joblessness only among labor-force participants (U ÷ Labor Force), not among the whole population.

This calculator also reports the employment-population ratio (E-P ratio), which divides the employed count directly by the total CNP. The E-P ratio is less sensitive to the definition of "actively seeking" and is often preferred for long-run comparisons. Real-world data (e.g. BLS data for the US) is published monthly; this tool works with any comparable national or regional dataset.

Frequently asked questions

The labor force includes everyone who is employed plus those who are unemployed and actively seeking work. It excludes retirees, full-time students not working, people with disabilities not seeking work, and discouraged workers who have stopped looking.

The unemployment rate only measures joblessness among active participants. A falling unemployment rate can hide a deteriorating economy if many people have dropped out of the labor force altogether. The LFPR captures this by measuring active participation relative to the total working-age population.

For major economies the LFPR typically ranges from about 55% to 70% of the total civilian population. The US rate has hovered around 62–64% in recent years. It varies with demographics, retirement age norms, student enrollment, and social programs.
