How this is calculated

Pressure is force distributed over an area. PSI — pounds per square inch — uses pound-force (lbf) as the force unit and square inches as the area unit. To calculate PSI, simply divide the force in pounds by the contact area in square inches. Doubling the force doubles the pressure; doubling the area halves it.

On Earth, pounds-mass and pounds-force are numerically equal at standard gravity (1 lbm experiences 1 lbf of gravitational pull at 9.80665 m/s²), so the "lbs" entered here are treated as lbf. The result in SI units is: 1 psi = 6894.757293168 Pa (derived exactly from 1 lbf ÷ 1 in²).
