Formula
How this is calculated
Pressure is force per unit area, and the SI unit is the pascal (Pa), defined as one newton spread over one square meter. This tool converts every supported unit through a single shared base unit, the pascal. Each unit carries a fixed "to base" factor: the number of pascals in one of that unit. For example 1 bar = 100,000 Pa, 1 atm = 101,325 Pa, 1 psi is about 6,894.757 Pa, and both mmHg and torr are about 133.322 Pa.
To convert, your input is first multiplied by the source unit factor to express it in pascals, then divided by the target unit factor to land in the unit you want. In short: value_to = value_from x (toBase_from / toBase_to). This linear, ratio-only method works because all these units measure the same physical quantity through a constant proportion.
The factors for bar, atm and the pascal family are exact by definition; psi, mmHg and torr are rounded approximations, so results are shown to about six significant figures. The converter assumes absolute (not gauge) pressure and does not account for temperature, mercury density variation, or local gravity in the mmHg/torr definitions.
About this calculator
Pressure is force per unit area. The SI unit is the pascal (Pa), equal to one newton per square meter. Because a pascal is very small, practical work uses kilopascals, bar, psi (pounds per square inch) and atmospheres. Meteorology and vacuum work often use mmHg or torr, which are nearly identical.
This converter uses the pascal as its base unit. One bar equals exactly 100,000 Pa, one standard atmosphere equals 101,325 Pa, and one psi equals about 6,894.757 Pa. Both mmHg and torr equal approximately 133.322 Pa.
Frequently asked questions
One bar equals approximately 14.5038 psi.
One standard atmosphere (101,325 Pa) is about 14.6959 psi.
They are very nearly equal; both are about 133.322 Pa, so for most purposes they can be used interchangeably.
