Lease Mileage Calculator — Excess Mileage Cost
Enter your contract mileage allowance, how many miles you expect to drive, and the per-mile penalty to see if you will go over and what it will cost — then compare against pre-purchasing extra miles from the dealer upfront.

How does this calculator work?
Excess mileage cost = (estimated annual miles − allowed annual miles) × lease years × per-mile penalty. If a dealer offers pre-purchase miles below the penalty rate and you are likely to exceed the limit, buying upfront usually saves money. Penalty rates are 2024–2025 US estimates; check your contract for exact figures.
Formula
How this is calculated
Car leases cap the total mileage over the lease term; going over triggers a per-mile penalty charged at lease return. The penalty is fixed in the contract (commonly $0.10–0.30 per mile in the US) and is applied to every mile above the limit — there is no "rounding" or grace period unless specifically stated.
The calculator multiplies your annual estimates by the term to get total figures, then subtracts the allowed total from the estimated driven total. If the result is positive you have excess miles; multiplying by the penalty rate gives the fee you would owe at lease end. If you stay under the limit, unused miles are simply forfeited — leasing companies do not refund them.
Dealers sometimes offer pre-purchased miles at a discounted per-mile rate at signing. The calculator shows whether pre-buying is cheaper than paying the penalty later. Note that if you actually drive fewer miles than expected you will have overpaid for pre-purchased miles you did not use, so pre-buying only makes sense if you are fairly confident you will exceed the limit. Figures are estimates; always check your specific lease contract for the exact penalty rate and any end-of-lease inspection fees.
Frequently asked questions
At lease return the dealer inspects the odometer and charges the per-mile penalty specified in your contract for every mile over the limit. Penalties typically range from $0.10 to $0.30 per mile and can add up quickly — 5,000 excess miles at $0.20 costs $1,000.
Buying upfront is only advantageous if the pre-purchase rate is lower than the end-of-lease penalty rate AND you are confident you will use the extra miles. If you end up not needing them, you lose the prepayment. Compare both rates and use this calculator to see the break-even point.
Some leasing companies allow lease transfers (takeovers) where you transfer your lease to another driver. If the new lessee accepts the remaining term and the vehicle is under mileage, you avoid the excess charge. Check your lease agreement for transfer eligibility and fees.
