How does this calculator work?
Your commute cost is the round-trip fuel used (distance × 2 ÷ economy) times fuel price, plus daily tolls and parking. Multiply that daily total by workdays per month for the monthly cost, and by 12 for the yearly cost. Fuel, tolls and parking only, excluding wear and insurance.
Formula
How this is calculated
Start with your one-way distance, which is doubled to get the round trip you actually drive each working day. The fuel economy unit lets you choose miles per gallon (mpg) or liters per 100 km (L/100km). For mpg, daily fuel used is round-trip ÷ mpg gallons; for L/100km it is round-trip ÷ 100 × L/100km liters. Multiplying that quantity by the fuel price gives the daily fuel cost.
Daily tolls and daily parking are added to the fuel cost to get the full daily commute cost. This is multiplied by your workdays per month to get the monthly figure, and the monthly figure is multiplied by 12 for the yearly estimate. Distance and price units must be consistent (miles with price-per-gallon, or kilometers with price-per-liter); the tool does not convert between systems.
The estimate assumes a steady fuel economy and ignores variable factors such as traffic, weather, vehicle wear, insurance and depreciation. Economy must be greater than zero; tolls and parking default to zero when left blank. Use realistic averages for the most accurate picture of your true cost of driving to work.
Frequently asked questions
No. It covers fuel, tolls and parking only. Real ownership cost is higher once maintenance, tyres, insurance and depreciation are included.
Yes. Pick the L/100km unit, enter your distance in kilometers and your fuel price per liter, and all results stay in those units.
A typical full-time month is about 21-22 workdays. Adjust for part-time schedules, remote days or holidays to fine-tune the monthly and yearly totals.
