For a rectangular enclosure, fence perimeter = 2(L + W); for a circle, P = 2πr. Number of posts = ⌈perimeter ÷ spacing⌉, and total wire = perimeter × number of strands. Enter dimensions and post spacing to get all three estimates instantly.

How this is calculated
The perimeter formula depends on the enclosure shape. For a rectangular paddock, the perimeter is twice the sum of length and width: P = 2(L + W). For a circular yard, it is the circumference: P = 2πr. The enclosed area is L × W or πr² respectively — useful for checking stocking density.
Posts are spaced at regular intervals around the perimeter. The number of posts is the ceiling of (perimeter ÷ spacing), which guarantees full coverage. Typical post spacing is 2–3 m for barbed or high-tensile wire fencing; electric fence posts can be spaced up to 5 m apart. Corner posts, gate posts, and H-braces add to the total — budget 4–8 extra posts for a rectangle and 2–4 for a circular yard.
Total wire length is the perimeter multiplied by the number of strands (or rails). A 4-strand barbed wire fence around a 100 m × 80 m paddock needs 4 × 360 m = 1,440 m of wire, plus waste for stapling and tensioning. Add 5–10% to your wire order for splicing and wastage not captured by this calculator.
Frequently asked questions
For barbed or high-tensile wire fences, 2–3 m spacing is standard. Electric fences for cattle can use 4–5 m spacing with line posts, but dropper posts at 1 m intervals add strength. Close spacing (1–1.5 m) is typical for woven wire sheep or goat fencing where animals push against the fence.
Cattle fences typically use 3–5 strands of barbed or plain wire at heights of 40, 60, 80, and 110 cm. Sheep and goat fences often need 6–8 strands (or a woven wire netting) to prevent escape. Electric fences can use 1–3 strands but require good energiser output and regular weed clearing.
For a fixed area, a circle has the shortest perimeter (about 12% less fence than a square), so it uses fewer materials. However, rectangular paddocks are easier to subdivide, align with survey boundaries, and work with farm machinery. Circular yards are popular for handling and drafting livestock.
