How this is calculated

The heart spends roughly one-third of each cardiac cycle in systole (contracting) and two-thirds in diastole (relaxing). Because pressure is higher for less of the cycle, the true time-averaged mean arterial pressure is not the simple midpoint of SBP and DBP but is skewed toward diastole. The formula MAP = DBP + (SBP − DBP) / 3 captures this weighting, which is algebraically identical to (SBP + 2 × DBP) / 3.

Clinically, MAP is preferred over either SBP or DBP alone because it better reflects the steady driving force for tissue perfusion. A MAP below 60–65 mmHg is a common threshold for concern in intensive care: at this level kidneys, brain and heart may not receive sufficient oxygen. Hypertensive crisis is generally defined as MAP above 150 mmHg or SBP above 180 mmHg.
