How does this calculator work?
Volume (cc) = mass (mg) ÷ (density (g/cc) × 1,000). For water (1 g/cc): 500 mg = 0.5 cc. For honey (~1.42 g/cc): 500 mg ≈ 0.352 cc. 1 cc = 1 mL exactly. Select your substance or enter a custom density in g/cc to get the precise volume.

How this is calculated
Milligrams measure mass (how much matter an object contains); cubic centimetres (cc or cm³) measure volume (how much space it occupies). They are not directly interchangeable — a milligram of mercury occupies far less space than a milligram of air. The bridge between them is density (ρ = mass ÷ volume), expressed in g/cc.
The conversion works in two steps: first convert mg to grams by dividing by 1,000 (since 1 g = 1,000 mg); then divide by the density in g/cc to get the volume in cc. For water (density = 1 g/cc) the formula simplifies: 1 mg of water = 0.001 cc exactly. For honey (density ≈ 1.42 g/cc) the same mass occupies a smaller volume.
Note that cc and mL are exactly equal by SI definition, so the result applies to both. Preset densities are typical values at approximately 20 °C and standard atmospheric pressure; actual densities vary with temperature and composition. For pharmaceutical calculations, use the exact density from the product data sheet.
Frequently asked questions
Only for pure water at about 4 °C. In general, 1 mg of a substance occupies a different volume depending on its density. For water (1.000 g/cc): 1 mg = 0.001 cc. For mercury (13.534 g/cc): 1 mg = 0.000074 cc — much denser, so a smaller volume.
Clinicians sometimes need to calculate the volume of an injectable solution given a dose in mg and a known concentration in mg/cc (or mg/mL). For example, if a solution contains 10 mg/cc and you need 25 mg, you draw 2.5 cc. This calculator handles the simpler case where density (mass per unit volume) rather than concentration is known.
Most aqueous pharmaceutical solutions have densities close to water (1.000–1.050 g/mL) unless they contain high concentrations of dissolved substances. The density is listed in the product's Summary of Product Characteristics (SmPC) or data sheet. For quick estimates, use the water preset.
