About this calculator
Density is mass per unit volume. The SI unit is the kilogram per cubic meter (kg/m3), but laboratories commonly use grams per cubic centimeter (g/cm3), which is numerically identical to grams per milliliter and kilograms per liter. For reference, pure water has a density of 1 g/cm3, or 1000 kg/m3.
This converter uses kg/m3 as its base unit. Note that 1 g/cm3 equals 1000 kg/m3, while one pound per cubic foot equals about 16.0185 kg/m3. It is useful for material science, fluid mechanics and chemistry.
Frequently asked questions
Pure water has a density of about 1 g/cm3, which equals 1000 kg/m3.
Multiply by 1000. For example, 2.7 g/cm3 (aluminum) equals 2700 kg/m3.
Yes — one milliliter equals one cubic centimeter, so g/ml and g/cm3 are numerically identical.
