About this calculator

A weight and mass converter turns a quantity expressed in one unit into another across the common everyday systems: kilograms and grams in metric, and pounds, ounces, and stones in imperial and US customary use. It is the everyday helper for reading bodyweight, parcel weights, recipe quantities, and luggage limits that arrive in unfamiliar units.

The conversions rest on exact internationally agreed factors. One pound is defined as exactly 0.45359237 kilograms, which makes the rest follow: there are 16 ounces in a pound, 14 pounds in a stone, and 1000 grams in a kilogram. Internally the tool converts your input to a single base unit and then expresses it in the unit you requested, so every pair stays mutually consistent.

To use it, enter the number, select the unit you are converting from, and select the unit you want the result in. The answer updates instantly, and you can flip the direction or change either unit at any time. This makes it quick to bounce a figure back and forth, for example checking that a converted kilogram value really does map back to your original pounds.

When you read the result, remember the natural anchors. A kilogram is roughly 2.2 pounds, a stone is 14 pounds, and an ounce is about 28.35 grams. The stone is mainly used in the UK and Ireland for bodyweight, and it is always combined with pounds (for example 11 stone 4), so a decimal stone value may need splitting into whole stones plus leftover pounds.

The biggest source of confusion is the word ounce: the avoirdupois ounce used for general weight (about 28.35 g) is different from the troy ounce used for precious metals (about 31.10 g) and the fluid ounce used for volume. This calculator handles ordinary avoirdupois weight. Also note that mass and weight differ in physics, but for the purposes of these everyday conversions on Earth they are treated as interchangeable.

Frequently asked questions

One kilogram is approximately 2.2046 pounds. The exact relationship comes from the definition that one pound equals 0.45359237 kilograms, so dividing 1 by that figure gives the pounds-per-kilogram factor.

Exactly 14 pounds. The stone is used mainly in the UK and Ireland for bodyweight, and weights are usually written as whole stones plus leftover pounds, such as 12 stone 6 rather than 12.43 stone.

In physics, mass is the amount of matter and weight is the force of gravity on it. For everyday conversions on Earth they are effectively the same, so this tool treats kilograms, pounds, and stones as interchangeable for practical use.

The avoirdupois ounce (about 28.35 g) is used for general weight, the troy ounce (about 31.10 g) for precious metals, and the fluid ounce measures volume, not weight. This converter uses the standard avoirdupois ounce.

Divide the number of grams by 28.349523125, or multiply by about 0.03527. For example, 100 grams is roughly 3.53 ounces. To go the other way, multiply ounces by 28.35 to get grams.

Double the kilograms and add about 10 percent. For instance, 70 kg doubles to 140, plus 14 gives roughly 154 pounds, which is very close to the exact 154.32 pounds.
