Quick answer

How does this calculator work?

Lakhs = millions × 10; crores = millions ÷ 10. One million is 10 lakh (1,000,000 = 10 × 1,00,000) and 0.1 crore in the Indian numbering system. The conversion is exact — just multiply or divide by 10. No rounding or approximation involved.

Formula
Lakhs = Millions × 10 • Crores = Millions ÷ 10 • 1 lakh = 1,00,000; 1 million = 10,00,000
How this is calculated

The Indian (South Asian) numbering system groups digits differently from the Western system after the first three digits: instead of grouping in threes (thousands, millions, billions…), it groups in twos after the thousands place — giving lakh (10⁵ = 100,000), crore (10⁷ = 10,000,000) and so on. One million (10⁶) sits between lakh and crore: it is exactly 10 lakh. To convert, multiply the number of millions by 10 to get lakhs, or divide by 10 to get crores.

This purely arithmetic conversion has no approximation: 1 million = 1,000,000 = 10 × 1,00,000 (ten lakh) exactly. The relationship is fixed — it does not depend on exchange rates, country or year. The Indian system uses the terms lakh and crore in everyday speech and official finance documents across India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal and Sri Lanka.

Frequently asked questions

1 million = 10 lakh. One lakh is 1,00,000 (100,000) and one million is 10,00,000 (1,000,000). So 1 million ÷ 1,00,000 = 10 lakh exactly.

Divide millions by 10. 1 crore = 10 million = 100 lakh = 1,00,00,000. So 50 million = 5 crore, and 1 million = 0.1 crore.

The Western system groups digits in threes: thousands (10³), millions (10⁶), billions (10⁹). The Indian system groups in twos after 1,000: lakh (10⁵ = 100,000), crore (10⁷ = 10,000,000), arab (10⁹). The numbers are the same; only the grouping and naming differ.
